For those of you scratching your heads and wondering why images of bananas are taking over social media feeds in India, here’s what happened:
A video tweeted by Indian actor Rahul Bose explaining the exorbitant amount he was charged for two bananas at a luxury hotel took the internet by storm—5,700 retweets and counting so far.
You have to see this to believe it. Who said fruit wasn’t harmful to your existence? Ask the wonderful folks at @JWMarriottChd #goingbananas #howtogetfitandgobroke #potassiumforkings pic.twitter.com/SNJvecHvZB

It turns out that a “fruit platter”, consisting of just two bananas can cost as much as half a month’s Netflix subscription! The hotel charged the actor 442 rupees (a little over $6) for just two bananas – not gold plated bananas or some super-rare breed, just regular old bananas you can get for 10 rupees at the local veg market.
Following the viral video, the Twitterati chimed in with their own #RahulBoseMoment, sharing similar instances that burned a hole in their pocket.
Piggybacking on viral content that’s trending on social media has proven to be engaging for brands in the past, and once again, social media managers didn’t let another great opportunity pass them by.
